The Family Wellness Expo

The Shaw JCC hosted The Family Wellness Expo on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Officials estimate that over 3,000 people attended the event between the hours of noon and 4pm, nearly tripling the attendance of the event’s first year.

Families explored wellness through interactive activities at nearly 50 booths presented by non-profit and for-profit organizations from the Akron and Summit County areas. Children learned about Go, Slow and Whoa foods as well as healthy snacking with the Shaw JCC’s Early Childhood Department, Summa Health System made physical activity fun was done with an exercise wheel and Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection made more than 100 ID kits. Educational, environmental and medical elements of wellness also played a large role in the day’s activities.

Jared Fogle, national SUBWAY spokesman, was one of the highlights of the event. Visitors had the opportunity to meet Jared and check out the pants he wore as a 425 lb. man. Attendees also enjoyed special stage shows performed throughout the day. Sid the Science Kid performed on stage with David Palomo of Music Togetherฎ as the children danced and sang along and ETC School of Musical Arts wowed the crowd with their performances.

The Shaw JCC is looking ahead to the third annual Family Wellness Expo as we work to continue delivering the message that wellness is fun and for the entire family.”
