The Shaw JCC of Akron is governed by an elected Board of Trustees. From June 2008-June 2010, the president of the Shaw JCC of Akron is Marc Merklin.
Marc Merklin
Born and raised in the Akron area, Marc graduated from Copley Senior High School in 1978. He majored in American Studies at Case Western Reserve University, earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree, magna cum laude, in 1981. He continued his studies at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, earning his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1984. He was on the Western Reserve College Scholars List, Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of the Order of the Coif. He was Editor-in-Chief of the undergraduate yearbook, secretary of his junior class, and Assistant Editor of the Law Review. Marc was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Marc joined Brouse McDowell in 1984 and is currently a principal in the law firm concentrating practice in commercial and business law, commercial litigation, business counselling, and business insolvency and reorganization. Marc is currently the Chair of the firm=s Commercial Law Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. In 2005, Marc received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Community Leadership Association. In 2002, Marc received the Community Builders Award from United Way of Summit County for making a measurable difference in the community. In 1998, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Akron Jaycees honoring him as one of Akron=s top volunteers. He has also been awarded an Ohio State Bar Foundation Community Service Award. He is a past recipient of the Stewart Surloff President’s Award of the Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron, Murray Glauberman Young Leadership Award from the Jewish Community Center of Akron, and the Emanuel R. Isroff Young Leadership Award from the Akron Jewish Community Federation. Marc is a 1998 graduate of Class XIV of Leadership Akron.
Currently, Marc is President Elect of the Akron Bar Association, President Elect of the Shaw Jewish Community Center of Akron, Chairman of the Board of Child Guidance and Family Solutions, and a trustee of the Akron Bar Association Foundation. He is a past Chairman of the Board of United Way of Summit County, President of the Jewish Community Board of Akron, Inc., formerly the Akron Jewish Community Federation, Chairman of the Board of the Akron Community Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board.
Marc practices primarily in the business and commercial law area, representing large and mid-sized businesses. Marc also practices in the area of business reorganizations, including Chapter 11 representing debtors, creditors committees, trustees and creditors. He is involved in the acquisition and sale of troubled companies and represents borrowers in commercial lending transactions.
Marc and his wife, Sharon, reside in Fairlawn, Ohio and have three children, Laura, twenty three years old, Lisa, twenty one years old, and Brian, sixteen years old.
